EEG Completes Comprehensive Energy and Water Audit for Fancourt, South Africa

Fancourt, South Africa's premier luxury golf and lifestyle resort located along the scenic Garden Route in George, has concluded a comprehensive ASHRAE Level 2 Energy and Water Audit in collaboration with Energy Efficiency Group (EEG). Completed in July 2026, this structured technical assessment establishes a clear, data-driven framework for sustainable asset management and resource efficiency across the expansive 613-hectare property.

A Historic Manor and World-Class Golf Estate in George

Set within an expansive 613-hectare estate beneath the Outeniqua Mountains, Fancourt is a legendary hospitality destination combining resort accommodation, championship golf, leisure, wellness, conferencing, and dining. Spanning a total conditioned built-up area of approximately 40,988 m², the resort features a highly diversified utility footprint.

The property’s accommodation is split between the main Fancourt Hotel, which offers 115 rooms and suites across several low-rise series clusters, and the exclusive Manor House. Originally constructed in 1859 in the style of a Cotswold mansion, the Manor House is a registered national monument that has been meticulously preserved as an 18-suite boutique retreat. Fancourt’s leisure and recreational ecosystem is anchored by four Gary Player-designed golf facilities—including the flagship Links and the Montagu and Outeniqua courses—supported by a dedicated Conference Centre with a 350-seater ballroom, the holistic Spa at Fancourt, and five specialized dining venues.

A Strong Legacy of Environmental Stewardship 

The present project is a logical continuation of Fancourt's long-standing commitment to sustainable luxury and active environmental stewardship. Architecturally, the property integrates passive design strengths—such as deep overhangs and eaves, covered walkways, and mature tree shading—that naturally mitigate thermal loads.

Prior to the audit, the resort had already established robust foundations in on-site resource management:

  • Renewable Energy Foundations: Fancourt is currently implementing a large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) installation with an installed capacity of approximately 2,650 kWp (equivalent to around 3,700 PV panels). The system is engineered to generate over 3,300 MWh of clean electricity annually, offsetting a major portion of the estate's grid electricity demand.
  • Self-Sufficient Golf Irrigation: To protect municipal potable water reserves, the resort operates a separate, dedicated irrigation network. Golf course irrigation relies entirely on river and dam abstraction—supplemented by active stormwater recovery—storing water in on-site estate dams and distributing it through an extensive pumping network. In addition, irrigation is optimized through smart pumping systems.
  • Lighting Modernization: The property has made significant progress in transitioning to energy-efficient operation through the widespread implementation of LED lighting across guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house facilities.
  • Heat Pumps for Domestic Hot Water (DHW) and Pool Heating: Heat pumps produce over 80% of the resort’s domestic hot water while fully supplying the heating requirements for all swimming pools and Jacuzzis.

L2 Audit Conclusion: A Roadmap to up to 34% Utility Savings 

To further optimize its resource performance and meet its sustainability targets, Fancourt partnered with EEG to undertake a comprehensive Energy and Water Audit, delivering a clear technical roadmap of 16 distinct efficiency solutions.

The resulting strategy balances operational optimizations with targeted capital upgrades across the resort’s mechanical, electrical, and thermal infrastructure. Designed to enhance system performance, operational reliability, and resource resilience across the 613-hectare estate, the roadmap addresses four key operational pillars: intelligent automation and control, HVAC performance efficiency, pumping and filtration optimization, and estate-wide water conservation and alternative supply.

The full implementation of this technical framework provides Fancourt with an actionable, data-driven path to achieve up to 34% cost savings across its total annual utility expenditures, while avoiding 968,479 kg of CO2 emissions annually. This initiative builds directly on Fancourt’s ongoing sustainability journey, further strengthening environmental stewardship across its landmark championship golf facilities and historic heritage estate.
