EEG Delivers Comprehensive Energy Audit for Cape Grace, a Fairmont Hotel

Cape Grace, A Fairmont Managed Hotel, is a luxury destination situated on its own private quay at Cape Town's vibrant V&A Waterfront. Originally opened in 1996, the hotel underwent a significant renovation in 2023, seamlessly blending its historic charm with modern sophistication.

The hotel features 112 elegantly designed rooms and suites, each with French windows or balconies that offer breathtaking views of the marina or the iconic Table Mountain. Guests can also enjoy three dining outlets, an outdoor heated pool, and a luxurious spa, all within a total built-up area of approximately 17,600 square meters.

Commitment to Sustainability

Cape Grace is dedicated to sustainability and has implemented a range of initiatives to minimize its environmental footprint while supporting the local community. Key efforts include:

  • Eliminating Single-Use Plastics: The hotel has removed single-use plastics from the guest experience, replacing plastic water bottles with reusable alternatives, introducing full-size refillable bathroom amenities, and transitioning to bamboo key cards.
  • Sustainable Food & Beverage Practices: Cape Grace prioritizes locally sourced, seasonal produce and works with sustainable suppliers while avoiding overfished species. The hotel also employs the Winnow Standard AI system to minimize food waste.
  • Water, Energy & Waste Management: The property features energy-efficient lighting, VFDs on most fans and pumps as well as a GRMS and a BMS. Additionally, Cape Grace has a comprehensive recycling program covering materials such as glass, cardboard, paper, plastic, metal, and Nespresso pods.
  • Green Key Certification: Cape Grace is one of the only hotels in South Africa to achieve the prestigious Green Key certification, a globally recognized standard for environmental responsibility and sustainable operations.

In line with Accor’s sustainability program, the hotel partnered with EEG to conduct an ASHRAE Level 2 energy audit and develop a decarbonization plan. Initiated in October 2024 and completed by year-end, this project resulted in a comprehensive roadmap featuring 16 energy efficiency measures. These measures are projected to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions by up to 34% while cutting water usage by 9.5%.

These sustainability initiatives reinforce Cape Grace’s commitment to environmental stewardship and energy efficiency while maintaining the highest standards of luxury hospitality.
